Red Hot Art is happening May 31st and June 1st, 2008 in Stevens Square Park, just south of downtown Minneapolis. This 7th annual community arts festival features local emerging visual artists, two stages of performing artists, and public art installations. The audience (not just kids!) is encouraged to participate in hands-on arts activities facilitated by local arts organizations. Red Hot Art is guided by the notion that art is for everyone. We are most interested in supporting local, emerging artists who are not on the traditional art fair circuit, and who are producing authentic works of artistic self-expression. We encourage artists to bring both original pieces and reproductions, as well as to demonstrate their art form while tending their booths at the fair. A maximum of 100 artists will be accepted to participate in Red Hot Art 2008.
Fees for artists are set significantly lower than at other area art fairs. There is no application fee. If accepted to participate, the fee is $45.00 (for a 10’x10’ space). Artists may share booth space by adding $15.00 to the fee for each additional artist sharing the booth – but all artists must submit their own applications and work samples. (Booth fee for submissions received after deadline is $60.00)
Submission Criteria
Artists are judged against the mission of the festival to celebrate the work of local artists with unique vision, with some preference for emerging artists. We are looking for art that is not commercially motivated. Where all artists meet the criteria, residents of the Stevens Square – Loring Heights neighborhood will be favored over those living outside the neighborhood (bounded by I-94, Lyndale Ave, Franklin Ave and 35-W); secondary preference is given to Minneapolis artists over other metro-area artists. We do not accept submissions from out-of-state artists.
Art may be submitted in any media. Please note that this is not a crafts fair: all work submitted must be original works of art. Items made from kits, work composed of commercial merchandise, commercially produced offset prints without original works, ceramics and other products made from commercial molds, etc. will not be considered. If you question the eligibility of your work, contact the Stevens Square Center for the Arts at Caitlin@redhotart.org before submitting.
